More Asus

I know – I may be writing too many eee PC posts lately.  Chill though – OK?

I have a business trip coming up in about a month or so.  I am looking forward to taking the eee with me.   I have envisioned that it is going to be the perfect laptop to travel with.  First it is cheap, I am not going to have to be too cautious with it.  If I lose it – it won’t be the end of the world.  It is VERY light.  It should be much easier to get in and out of security with.

Seriously, if you are looking for a cheap laptop – you owe it to yourself to give one of the eee PCs a spin.

Adding Thunderbird to 2g eee PC

For whatever reason the 2g eee PC doesn’t come with an email client installed.  Plenty of links to different webmail sites – but no client.

I hunted around and found some super easy instructions for getting Thunderbird on to your eee PC.

First open a terminal window.  To do so hit Control – Alt – T.

In the terminal window type:  sudo synaptic

That will bring up the synaptic manager.  Go to Settings and then Repositories.  On the repository screen you want to change everything that says 700 to read 701.

Save your changes in synaptic then hit reload.  Then exit synaptic.  You should be back to your terminal window.

In the terminal type: sudo apt-get install thunderbird

Next you will need to download an update fix.  After Thunderbird is finished and you are back at the terminal window prompt, type:

sudo apt-get install eeepc-updatepack-20071126

That’s it.  You will now have a Mail icon on your Work tab.

More eee PC

So I have had the eee PC for a few days now.  Was it a good purchase?  I believe so.  It will be great to take with me while I travel.  I really don’t need a full laptop on business trips.  I mainly need to check my email and visit a few websites.  It will also be great for any writing projects or note taking.  I popped in a 8 gig high speed SD card in it today – that was an easy way to grab 8 more gigs of storage.
